On January 1, 1997, the Township of Alfred, the Village of Alfred, the Township of Plantagenet and the Village of Plantagenet joined together to form the Township of Alfred and Plantagenent.
A forty minute drive from the centre of Ottawa, travelling east on Russell Road or Hightway 17 will bring you to the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. The Ottawa River, which runs along all the north limit of the Township, offers great sites for summer residences. The South Nation River crosses the Township, through rich valley lands. The area offers great sites for cross-country skiing and exciting snowmobile trail.
Alfred and Plantagenet is the site of the Alfred College of the University of Guelph, a francophone institution specialized in agri-food education and research. Customized training is offered through day and evening courses. In July and August, youngsters between 7 and 16 years of age enjoy unusual summer camps sponsored by the College. The Alfred College is responsible for tourist favorites such as the Agri-Tour Weekends in September.
